Waistbeads represent my heritage and culture; whilst providing a subtle embellishment to my femininity. They are personal and intimate.

I was introduced to waistbeads very early in life; when my father asked my mother to make sure all his daughters were fitted with waistbeads, as part of our 'rite of passage'. I immediately fell in love with the colours, shapes, and textures of the beads against my skin. Even though they are not on display, it's good to feel connected to my traditional roots.

Initially, I started working on my personal collection ~ different colours to match my moods and personality ~ but enjoyed the process so much that I was encouraged to sell them. This is how the TNP Waistbeads project was born.

Being a creative has always been evident in my approach to everyday tasks. It is extremely fulfilling to make things with my own hands, knowing that each carefully made piece will be worn by somebody who derives pleasure from wearing them as I do.

Please rest assured that they are all handmade with great passion, attention to detail and delicate care. Approaching my craft with great enthusiasm; I treat each piece as if it is being made for my personal use because I refuse to sell what I wouldn’t want to wear myself.

Fondly known as the maker of waistbeads, original black art, and curator of chunky bangles! I design and create other items like earrings, greeting cards, and sew bespoke or 'upcycled' fabric jewellery and collars. I also love curating pieces that fit into the overall aesthetics of the shop and get to share them with you too.

As I grow and learn to boldly explore other expressions of my creativity; I hope that my passion for promoting positive reaffirmation and cultural value will be reflected in the one-off pieces that are made available in my little Afro Vintage Boutique.
